The Click Fraud Problem
Click fraud has become a major problem for online marketers. If
you participate on Google adwords campaigns or Overture, you
must already pay a lot for your campaigns.
What is click fraud?
Click fraud is the deliberate clicks to PPC search engine ads
for completely other reasons than expressing interest for buying
the related products or services. Overture defines click fraud
as clicks arising for reasons other than the good-faith

10. Lightening Fast Ways To Escalate Your Sales

copy may be an art form, but it's an art that can be easily
learned with a little guidance and a little practice. So stop

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING
During the last year we have seen a big change in how marketers
promote their products. We believe that truth in advertising
will get you much farther than hype, dishonesty or misleading

program or service you promote. This is FACT.

is.
Let's say you are placing an add for your home page

use the following: www.yourname.com/?code If you type ?code
after your address it will still take you right to your web page
with no interference (go ahead try it I know you want to!) but
what it does do is register the address in your web-server logs!

Recent research predicts that the online ad market will decline
In 2001, net advertising is a buyer's market.
Everyone has seen the media spotlight focused on the big
dot-coms who, dependent on ad revenues, have either gone out of
business or been forced to cut back.
Unfortunately, it's the same story for small business owners.
The economic downturn leaves many potential advertisers much
more reluctant to pay the prices they would have a year or two
ago.
I recently came across a message board where one advertiser
summed it up this way: in these hard ...

THE EFFECTIVE E-ADVERTISEMENT
Not surprisingly, those who did not experience the early,
freewheeling days of the net frequently find it difficult to
write effective ads for application on the web. The spontaneous
sense of playfulness, the undeniable urge to hack, the use of

all-too-easily identifiable leaning toward the grungy side (a
symptom typical of both the true hacker and the wannabe) come
together in a way that profoundly challenges, if it does not

Hard-sell Commercials vs. Identity Commercials
There is a man who owns a locally based chain of used computer

he should be presented with an award for producing the most
annoying television commercials in history. That award probably
wouldn't mean much to him, as he is now a rich man who couldn't
care less if his commercials are ridiculous. After all, those
commercials made him the rich man he is today.

Why Some Ads Fail Miserably While Other Succeed Wonderfully
The voice on the other end of the phone was tense and impatient.
It was a prospective client calling. After we introduced
ourselves, he got right to the point: "Our advertising isn't

Who I was talking to doesn't matter very much because it could
have been almost any of my prospects before they start working
with me. That's because, statistically, most advertising doesn't
work - if by "work" you mean, bring in new business. Think about

Long Copy Works Better - Or Is It Short Copy?
Ahhh! The never-ending battle. I'm sure you've heard both

customers need to be "lead" or "teased" into reading the next

On the other hand, advocates of short copy state that consumers

Customer Preferences in Online Advertising-Part 3 of 3
In part two of this series, we discussed the annoyance factor of
online ads and how to overcome them. In this last article, I'll
tell you how to use behavioral traits to direct advertising
efforts rather than demographics.
I am a strong proponent of defining your target audience. If you
don't know who you are communicating with, how will you be able
to do it effectively? Jupiter Communications' (www.jup.com)
survey backs up my claims.
What Difference Does Behaviorism Make? I'm sure almost ...

Inexpensive and Effective Advertising for Your Web Site
With so many businesses on the web and so many different ways of
promoting your site it is easy to spend far too much on
advertising and get far too little in return. Here are some
tried and true ways of promoting your business that are simple
and relatively cheap:
1. Using Banners to Promote Your Site
Banner exchanges are about the oldest form of advertising on the
Internet, and while they won't flood your site with customers,
they can be an effective low-cost promotional tool.

NEWS OR SNOOZE
A press release can be an effective weapon in the fight for
media and public attention. In fact, many businesspeople don't
even think twice before writing or ordering a press release,
correctly assuming that a release can provide the necessary
publicity to boost sales.
As much as a well-written press release can do for your image,
you need to be sure that your business or product is appropriate
for a release. Believe it or not, a press release that isn't
truly newsworthy can easily end up ...

Getting a new business off the ground is a daunting prospect.
There are so many things to consider: office space, equipment,

Use Comparisons To Make Your Point
One of the first lessons I ever learned about advertising was
that you have to get your point across quickly, before your
audience loses interest. There's a big problem with this,
though: many sales messages are too complex to get across in
just a few seconds or paragraphs. This is especially true when
it comes to selling new technologies or sophisticated business
opportunities -- two "biggies" in Internet business.
So what can you do? On one hand, you want to make your message
short and easy ...

The Classified Challenge
Classified advertising is a marketing method that's hundreds of
years old. In the last digital decade online classified
advertising has exploded. You can reach millions of readers
within seconds after creating and posting an ad. It's an
inexpensive way to market yourself, your service, or your
product, and your customer comes LOOKING FOR YOU when reading
classifieds. Yet too few of them score. Why not? They're vague.
They don't sell within seconds.

Keep your offers as flexible as possible. If you offer a set

A few other options would be to tell prospects that you'll take

Which Works Better
James Vicary, an advertising expert, went into a 1950s movie
theater to test his devious new tool for persuading others.
During the movie he allegedly flashed the commands "EAT POPCORN"
and "DRINK COKE" so fast that the unsuspecting audience couldn't
consciously see the words. Vicary claimed Coke sales jumped
18.1% and popcorn sales leaped 57.7%.
On that day, "subliminal advertising" was born.
Today subliminal advertising is banned by most major countries.
The FCC in America outlaws it by ...

Another way is to take your customer to a "thank you" web page

Now, this increased competition COULD be a problem for the

The Life and Times of a Grizzly Ad!
The first point would have to be the most desired but most often
missed. How do you perceive your own work? Your ad just isn't a

Why is that such a surprise? Can you remember the last time you

Yet businesses are still putting banners up. Are they just

banner ads they have on their site, the more money they will
make. They blanket their sites with them, hoping, that the more
banners people see, the better the chance, that someone will
actually click on them.
What they don't understand, however, is that they are actually
driving traffic away, by making their sites unattractive and
slow. The banner ads that were supposed generate income drive
away potential customers.

Why you should never pay "rate-card"
Off line advertising is a great way to get an extra traffic
boost, but it can be very expensive if you haven't done it
before....
There is a 'fixed', published rate for advertising in
newspapers and magazines. This is called the "rate-card" price.
The 'rate-card' is a newspapers or magazines published "priced
list" of space in the publication concerned.
Does the "rate-card" price reflect the average price you could
expect to pay in the publication concerned? NO! It represents

How Effective Are Your Ads?
Do you read classifieds ads? I do because I run an advertising
ezine and I can tell you it's an education at times. Ads are the
first impression the unsuspecting public gets of you and your
business. They are "make or break", so do yours shape up? Let's
take a hard-hitting look -- names omitted to protect the guilty!
Frightening Realities
One of the most frightening things -- and, I admit, amusing for

Don't Just Advertise, Track Your Advertising!
Advertising is not an exact science, so you need to give
yourself every advantage, when it comes to determining where to
spend your budget!
When you place your Contact or Autoresponder info at the end of
the ad, do it so it's a simple clickable link:
put ?subject=key after your email address.
eg;
mailto:info@yourdomain.com?subject=Key
Or if you prefer to just drive traffic to your web site you can
use the same concept just a different format.
eg;
http://yourdomain.com?key
Then when you check ...

on branding. For us in small business, only a very small group

STOP THINKING IN A BOX
When advertisers on the Internet think about ways to advertise,
they tend to think ezines, banners, text links, opt-in lists,
guaranteed visitors, targeted leads, FFA pages, classifieds,

degrees of success. But what have they forgotten?
In order to be truly successful in advertising, you need to

Internet for any length of time, chances are you have fallen for
at least one fantastic claim that "this will bring you great
weatlh and success." There are, of course, some completely bogus
sites with promises that, if you really think about it, could
not possibly turn out to be true.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are many sites that
really do have a great value and really can follow through with
their promises.
But what ...

RESPONSIBLE ADVERTISING
Does that sound boring? If so, stick with me'it gets better!
Some years ago Bruce Barton shared this story:
"One day when I was young in advertising, I slipped a piece of
paper into my typewriter and wrote an advertisement for a life
insurance company. It was addressed to young husbands and
fathers. One of the coupons received in reply came from a
traveler in Rio de Janeiro, whose home was in New Jersey. He was
38 years old, married, and the father of three children. ...

Are You A Copy Cat?
How many times a day have you seen the same ad? If you are like
me, you hit the delete key and go on. The product or service may

Many affiliate programs give you ads to run. The problem is that
thousands of people run the same ad word for word. What should
you do to be different?
It is best to make your own ad. Use the ads that the affiliate
program gives you as a guide. Using your own words can make a

Creating Successful Ad Copy!
Creating successful ad copy is important to the success of your
company or web site. Without the right structure or word format
your chances of selling your products or services are slim to
none.
One of the most important aspects to writing killer copy is you
first must really believe in your product or service. If you
don't, forget it. If you truly believe your product or service
is something very special, everything you write, say, or do with
it will be done with enthusiasm. This enthusiasm ...

Gone Fishing ???
When I was young, my Dad used to take me fishing. It didn't take
too many trips out on that little motor boat to learn that the
ocean is a very BIG place. Even though I knew there were
millions of fish swimming around, there was no guarantee that
we'd go home with a bucketful at the end of the day. We would
have to use a variety of bait and fishing techniques to make a
catch.
Marketing your business on the Internet is a lot like going
fishing. There are millions of potential customers ...

The Great Web Advertising Debate

The answer is at the end of the article........
One of the most common debates around is over web advertising.
Some sites that you visit have so many animated banners that it
looks like a shooting gallery! Others will throw up 20 windows
of ads when you try to exit the site. I call these tactics
"scumvertising". I know of a number of people who have stopped
using the World Wide Web due to scumvertising. Some say, "The

Put Some Punch In Your Classified Ad
Classified ads are the world's number one cheap way to
advertise. They cost just a fraction of a large print ad. And
you get your classified ad in everything from an email
newsletter to USA Today.
Most classified ads are either hard to understand or not
terribly exciting. To get sales, you need people to immediately
understand your offer. You also need to build a bit of an
emotional fire under them.
Start each sentence with an action word. Get this.., Save

7 Reasons To Advertise With Paid Email
You've probably noticed the recent explosion of new
paid-to-read email sites on the Internet. You've probably also
noticed that some of these sites don't last very long. Why? In a
nutshell-too much competition. Paid email sites make their money
off advertising. With so many other similar sites out there,
it's getting harder and harder to draw advertisers.
On the other hand this competition creates an ideal situation
for advertisers. Advertisers now have an enormous selection of

SAYING A LOT WITH A LITTLE
Classified ads are perhaps the most popular form of small-
business advertising available today. The reasons are many, and
range from cost, to simplicity, to effectiveness when seen by
the right kind of audience. How you use your classified ad is up
to you, but no matter your business or your goal, one fact
remains: if they're going to say what needs to be said and get
the results you need in such a small space they must be written
well.
First, make sure your ad grabs the attention of your ...

Spice Up Your Ad With These Words That Sell
Like us, you probably get stacks of junk mail and loads of email
messages every day. Many of these marketing materials are
written by top writers and sent to vast audiences at great

Because companies invest heavily in these direct mail marketing
efforts, they are careful to monitor results. Professional
marketers keep the strategies that work and toss the ones that
don't.
Watch your "junk mail" closely and you will get some great ideas
on how to make your next ad, sales letter, or web ...

It's a great book. But if Dale had titled it "How to Remember

power in good titles.
What you may not realize is the words "How to Win Friends ...

How To Get The Media To Cover Your Story
There are two big misconceptions that a fair amount of business
professionals hold about the media and their attitude towards
those in the public relations field.
The first misconception is that the media despises anyone in
public relations. Some people tend to think that journalists or
other news writers prefer to dig up all their stories from
scratch, and not get ideas from outside sources.
The second and opposite misconception about the media is that
they are lazy, and simply print press ...

Banners Do Bring Traffic!
Banner advertising remains one of the most effective and cost
efficient manners of gaining targeted responses to visit your
web site.
To benefit from this form of online advertising you must have a
web page. It would also be preferable, though not essential, if
the traffic to your web page is already established.
The reason is that banner exchange programs base the number of
times they display your banner on others web pages based on how
many times their banners are viewed on your web page.

Most people attempting to do business online not only send out a

And, in order to be the "Perfect Online Ad" it only needs two

2. An Email Link.
The Killer Title.
The Title must be short, no more than 6 to 8 words. Less in this

Why?
First, because Ezines and Newsletters are read by people that

Those people read those ezines and newsletters because they are
about a subject that is important to them.
That creates a niche or target audience for delivery of whatever

Successful Online Ad Tips!
Are you placing your ad on the web and not getting any response?
There are three basic things that you must do in order to
succeed when placing your ads online:
1. Be Consistent.
A one shot ad will simply not work. This is true even when
placing ads off-line. If you do not plan on running your ad a
minimum of 6 to 12 times, then you should expect that your
efforts will fail.
The more exposure you give your ad, the greater the chance that
it will accomplish what you are trying to do, which ...

Advertising Costs Getting Too High? Start Your Own Ad Co-op!
Everyone knows that advertising is essential to growing a
business. One problem that small business owners have always
faced is the high cost of marketing. Most, however don't realize
that there is an effective way to reduce the cost of your
advertising while - at the same time - increasing its reach.
Advertising co-ops are nothing new. Usually they are a "perk"

their products. Because the retailer has direct access to

the pros and cons for these mediums are, you can get a better

Surprisingly, just a few years ago the same people were rushing

Making Your Ads Work!
Advertising needn't be expensive, and for those in the know;
advertising can also be free. But occasionally your 'free' ads
can get lost in the e-zine jungle. And, unfortunately, many
people misuse their free ads. By 'misuse' I mean; do not word
their ads appropriately. How many times have you seen the exact
same ad for the exact same product? Probably too many times. Why
would you want to risk having your ad placed directly underneath
somebody else's ad that is exactly the same as yours?

How To Write Headlines That Could Make You A Fortune
What do people see in advertising? Headlines! What do you see
when you are glancing through a newspaper or magazine?
Headlines! What is it that makes you stop for a moment and look
at an advertisement, or even read some of it? The headline! An
advertisement headline is no different from a news headline.
Both are designed to capture the reader's attention and to
encourage them to read further.
The same applies with a radio commercial. It also needs a
headline to attract the listener's attention ...

SMASHING THE MYTH OF THE PRESS RELEASE
SMASHING THE MYTH OF THE PRESS RELEASE
by Bill Stoller Founder, PublicityInsider.com
A musician spends years honing his craft. He writes world-class
songs and performs them in a manner that moves his listeners to
tears. He records a demo tape and sends it to record labels. He
gets a contract and becomes rich, famous and adored.
The lesson: demo tapes are the secret of becoming a famous
musician.
Wait, you say, the demo tape was just a tool, just his way of
conveying his talent. It's his ability ...

Can't Get Right - Maybe It's Just a Word
One of the people I worked with in advertising, had an
expression "Can't Get Right". What the heck does it mean? Well,
when he could not seem to get ad copy.... right, he would walk
in and say, this ad "Can't Get Right".
This was his way of telling me that he had come to wits end
trying to get this particular ad to his level of perfection.
Actually, he would tell you that it was my level of perfection
that was not met. :o)
What does one do when they reach a point of knowing that
something is ...

"Tag, You're It !"
"Tag, You're It !" By Larry Johnson Biz Site Biz E-Zine
Some call them "tag lines"; others refer to them as "catch
lines" or "tie-in-slogans." Whatever the words used to refer to
them, they are perhaps the most important part of your
promotional writing.
Do you recognize any of these ? :
"Like a rock..." "Fly the friendly skies..." "It's the real
thing !" "Quality is job number one" "The quicker-picker-upper"
Most of those tag lines are recognizable by us without even
including the name of the ...

is not meant to be an all-inclusive panacea for those who want
to succeed quickly online. Patience is a good teacher also. Here
are three simple rules for success on the internet: 1) DEVELOP

When marketing your website, it's important to know which of

You can learn a lot about this by analyzing your website's

However, even with the best statistics programs, it can be
difficult to determine where exactly your visitors are coming
from. Did they arrive on your product page by clicking a link in

"Successful Online Ad Tips!"
The more exposure you give your ad, the greater the chance that
it will accomplish what you are trying to do, which is to ...

"Simple Messages in Advertising"
It is better to advertise with simple messages and have everyone
understand you, than to advertise with complex messages and have
only 20% of viewers understand you.
Brilliantly clever advertising executives often come up with ad
campaigns that dazzle viewers. Viewers may be dazzled, but
whether they can discern what is actually being communicated in
the ad remains to be seen.
When considering how you want to phrase your advertising copy,
don't tailor the message to what would impress you. ...

MTV Cribs, we even know the intimate details of their home

ad campaigns involving celebrities are more successful than any
other type of advertising. Michael Jordan says "Wear Hanes" and

EMERGING E-MAIL CAMPAIGNS
Today's business has adopted online advertising for many
reasons. It's fast, it's inexpensive, and it produces revenue.
But 100 years of advertising history has also created something
within the American consumer that they will not let go of. If
your campaign is going to attempt to defy that, you are setting
yourself up for a final resting place with the "patented

It is well documented that the 1980's brought the "Age Of

When running a business, whether it is located on Main Street in
your town or online, publicity is essential. When a small
