How Computers Add - A Logical Approach
We looked at Number Systems and counting (see It's a Binary
World - How Computers Count) last time. As a quick refresher, we
saw that computers are made up of many units of 0 and 1, the
binary system. 1 is the highest digit possible so numbers in the
computer are stored as for example 1010 or 10 in decimal. We
also saw that these binary numbers can be seen as octal (8) or
hexadecimal (16) numbers - in this case 1010 becomes 15 octal,
or A hex.
You probably realise that the 'standard' PC code is ...

The Shape of Things--The Skills Required to be a Great Geometry Tutor
A geometry tutor has a particularly difficult job. While algebra is often said to be the first truly abstract mathematical discipline that most students encounter, geometry (which is usually taught the year after algebra is taught) requires that the student begin learning to apply the relatively abstract concepts learned in algebra to real life problems involving shapes and volumes.
Geometry is a very applied mathematical science and, as such, any college or university program in the natural ...

Algebra Simplified
Algebra is a very important class to take. It provides you a foundation for all of the math classes that you take in the future, and teaches you critical math skills that will actually come in handy for the rest of your life. But it is very important that you are caught up with your class when it comes to your knowledge of the content. If you fall behind for just one day, the concepts will become more and more foreign as the future lessons build upon the original ideas. Therefore, if you begin ...

My daughter Katherine is in 4th Grade at Mount Vernon Magnet

Algebra
Algebra is a branch of mathematics in which arithmetic
operations are generalized and applied to variable quantities
and specific numbers. In our schooldays, we use algebra to solve
polynomial equations, whereas professional mathematicians,
physicists, economists, and computer engineers use algebra to
study abstract mathematical structures with the properties of
addition and multiplication.
Both elementary and higher algebra stipulate that only a certain
number of quantities should be involved ...

Basic Algebra Helper
Most high school students have problems with algebra when they
first encounter it. Why is that? Well, think back to your own
school days! Firstly, you are introduced to several new
mathematical concepts, which take a little time to absorb. Then,
there is the whole question of using x's, y's, and z's with
numbers. Okay, you eventually learn to live with that. And
finally, there are all those equations that have to be solved
and solved correctly if you are want to pass your algebra exam.
To the ...
